Liverpool fans have been left fuming after a “shocking” decision by the referee to send off defender Andy Robertson.
The Reds looked set to steal a huge result at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Robertson’s 69th minute header but quickly lost their grip by conceding a goal and suffering a red card in quick succession.
Left-back Robertson attempted to tackle Emerson Royal but ended up wildly kicking the forward without getting close to touching the ball.
And following a lengthy review on the VAR screen, referee Paul Tierney opted to give the Scotsman a straight sending off, leaving Liverpool players and fans outraged at his decision.
The referee had failed to give Tottenham captain Harry Kane his marching orders earlier in the match for a similarly reckless challenge.
Kane dangerously slid in to dispossess Robertson in the first-half but caught the full-back high on his ankle.
The England captain was lucky to get away without a sending off as Tierney did not even bother double-checking his decision with the help of the VAR screen on the side-lines.
And the Reds were left furious by the fact that their player was sent off in another instance of inconsistency by Premier League referees.

One person highlighted the double-standards by writing on Twitter: “If that is a red for Andy Robertson why on earth wasn't Harry Kane having a bath at half time? Shocking refereeing.”
A second added: “Shocking how Robertson gets a red but Kane didn’t earlier. English captaincy protection paying dividends.”
Another said: “Absolutely shocking from Paul Tierney, Robertson’s ban should be lifted after appeal or Tierney should have to answer for why Kane wasn’t shown red earlier or the penalty on Jota wasn’t awarded.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool fan website Anfield Watch added: “All we ask for is consistency.”
