Liverpool fans say ‘mentality monsters’ are back after late comeback vs Palace

Liverpool fans are convinced they're back to being "mentality monsters" after coming from behind to beat Crystal Palace.

Late goals from Mohamed Salah, his 200th for the club, and Harvey Elliott cancelled out Jean-Philippe Mateta's opener to move Jurgen Klopp's side above Arsenal in first place. The Reds were helped by Jordan Ayew's sending off, which occurred seconds before Salah's equaliser.

Some of the great Liverpool teams of old had a knack not only for grinding out results when they weren't playing well, but also doing so with late, dramatic comebacks, and many supporters on social media think this current side has what it takes to join them in infamy after watching today's performance.

"What a comeback. What a response. What a team," one Liverpool fan beamed on X. Another wrote: "The mentality monsters are back baby!" A third added: "Liverpool have done it again. Mentality monsters."

Despite having a lot of the ball, the Reds did very little with it and deserved to be behind when Mateta opened the scoring mid-way through the second half. The Palace forward netted from the spot after Ayew was kicked in the box by Liverpool youngster Jarell Quansah.

With 15 minutes left to play Ayew picked up a second yellow card, very harshly Palace fans will argue, after fouling Elliott as Liverpool countered, and the momentum in the game shifted. Less than a minute later the Reds were level when Salah's deflected effort spun past Sam Johnstone following a penalty box scramble.

With their tails up, the visitors pushed for a late winner, and got one through Elliott who smashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box through a crowd of players and past Johnstone in the first minute of injury time. The Merseysiders held on for the remainder of stoppage time to seal their 11th win of the season and consign Palace to their fourth defeat in five league games.

Despite going top, Liverpool will drop back down to second if Arsenal beat Aston Villa in the late kick-off, while Roy Hodgson's men, who are currently 14th, could drop to 16th if results don't go their way this weekend.
