Liverpool get double injury boost after worst fears confirmed over Van Dijk

Liverpool look to have at least a couple of pieces of good news on the injury front after the devastating blow suffered by Virgil van Dijk.

The Dutch centre-back faces months on the sidelines with a knee injury following Jordan Pickford's out of control lunge in Sunday's Merseyside derby.

Van Dijk will now have surgery on his ACL and faces a battle to play again this season, although the Dutchman insists he is prepared to fight his way back to fitness and seems confident that he will play again before 2020/21 is out.

"With the support of my wife, kids, family and everyone at Liverpool, I'm ready for the challenge ahead," he said on social media.

"I'd like to thank everyone for the messages of support, it's meant a huge amount to me and my family, and I'll now be doing everything possible to support my teammates in any way that I can ahead of a big few weeks as I take my recovery day by day. I'll be back."

While Liverpool won't be putting a timescale on Van Dijk's recovery, Jurgen Klopp will at least be cheered by the news that the problems suffered by Alisson and Thiago Alcantara don't seem to be as bad as first feared.

Goalkeeper Alisson suffered a shoulder injury in training prior to the 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa, and was initially ruled out for up to six weeks.

However, a report from The Athletic says the Brazilian's recovery is ahead of schedule, and he is expected to return to the Liverpool goal before the end of this month.

Thiago, meanwhile, went to hospital after Richarlison's studs-up challenge in the closing minutes of Saturday's clash.

Liverpool had feared that the summer signing – who was excellent in the Merseyside derby – would face a long spell on sidelines with a knee issue, but it is thought that his injury isn't too serious.

He is set to miss this week's trip to Ajax in the Champions League, but should be available to return soon.
