Liverpool’s goalkeeper coach John Achterberg has detailed his reaction to Loris Karius’ blunders in the 2018 Champions League final.
Two howlers from the German keeper saw the Reds beaten by Real Madrid in Kiev, with Karius subsequently replaced by Alisson as the number one at Anfield.
There had been high expectations for Karius after his arrival from Mainz, but he failed to live up to those hopes and showed he was not ready to be Liverpool’s long-term option.
The biggest lowpoint of his career at Anfield came in that Champions League final though, which was the Reds first in 11 years.
Things started to go wrong five minutes into the second-half, when he inexplicably threw the ball straight to Karim Benzema who fired into an empty net to open the scoring.
Sadio Mane levelled the clash before Gareth Bale delivered a magnificent overhead kick to put Los Blancos back in front.
And their win was sealed seven minutes from time when Karius allowed Bale’s long-range shot to bounce in off his hands.
That was Karius’ last appearance for Liverpool, with Allisson signed that summer, but Achterberg has insisted that he holds no ill will to the hapless German.

“Working at the top is wonderful. You hope that your goalkeepers make as few mistakes as possible,” he told AD.
“Karius making a mistake in the final against Real Madrid? You win together, and you lose together. It can make or break a career, but I can’t say anything negative about him.
“No, not even in my book. Like I said, it’s not that kind of book. People should buy other books for that.
“In my book, Klopp talks about how we work together. And how it is to work every day at perhaps the biggest club on earth.”

Karius has been sent out on a series of loans since that infamous night in Ukraine, but was unable to secure another exit in the summer transfer window.
His contract with the Reds expires at the end of this season and will likely leave for free unless he is moved on in January.
