Liverpool icon who scored vs Man Utd now unrecognisable with full head of hair

Either Andrea Dossena has discovered the fountain of youth, or he was very adept at keeping things under his lid during his football career.

The former Liverpool left-back is grabbing attention in his new life as a manager after he was seen sporting a very different look to what fans at Anfield were used to during his career. So much so that the Kop may struggle to recognise their former left-back at all.

And while the stress of a career in coaching tends to see most tacticians lose their locks, the opposite has been true for Dossena. The 42-year-old is currently managing Serie C outfit Pro Vercelli in his native Italy and has enjoyed some encouraging results thus far in his latest post.

Dossena spent just 18 months on Merseyside during his playing career and was largely considered one of Rafa Benitez's less successful signings. However, the former left-sided specialist assured himself of a place in the Anfield annals when he scored in 4-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford in March 2009.

It went down as one of the Liverpool's most treasured results from the Benitez era, and super-sub Dossena made his mark on the rivalry when he lobbed Edwin van der Sar from outside the box. The bald-headed cult figure left the Reds for Napoli less than a year later but would always have that moment of glory to his credit.

Which former Liverpool player would you bring back into today's squad and why? Let us know in the comments section below.

Now donning a hairdo that wouldn't look out of place in a Boyzone line-up, Dossena is drawing up his own plans in Vercelli. And after a year at fellow Serie C side Renate last term, the Leoni have looked promising under his command and currently sit seventh in the league table.

While his short stay at Anfield wasn't as glittering as he might have hoped, Dossena did go on to win the Coppa Italia with Napoli in 2012. A couple of years later, he was part of Gus Poyet's Sunderland squad that finished as runners-up to Manchester City in the League Cup final.

With a new look – and practically a new identity – in place, the 10-cap former Italy international is envisioning fresh fortune from the sideline. But regardless of how his managerial career pans out, Dossena will always have that day at the Theatre of Dreams.
