Mohamed Salah’s contract situation continues to overshadow their brilliant start to the new campaign, but Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are reportedly working on a way to finalise a deal. Salah has further enhanced his status as one of the world’s best players this season with an incredible 15 goals and five assists in just 12 games across all competitions.

That feat is made even more impressive by the fact Salah had only scored eight times at the same stage during the 2017/18 campaign when he broke records with 44 goals.

He’s proven invaluable to Liverpool over the years and the ‘Egyptian King’ will be vital in mounting a serious title challenge in the latter stages of the season.

But there continues to be some doubt over Salah’s long-term future at the club given he has little over 18 months left on his contract.

Reports have indicated the 29-year-old is hoping for a new deal worth in the region of £400,000-a-week.

That would smash Liverpool’s current wage structure, with Virgil van Dijk reportedly the club’s highest earner on £220,000-a-week.

Any agreement to keep Salah at the club will almost certainly make him the club’s top earner.

But Liverpool so far appear reluctant to give in to Salah’s demands given that he will turn 30 next year.

More and more, athletes are maintaining a top-level performance well into their 30s with Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo key examples.

Salah regards himself in that bracket and will be among the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or this year and he seemingly wants his performances rewarded with a lucrative new contract.

Liverpool are only prepared to go so far, according to teamtalk, but FSG haven’t given up hope.

The report claims that Liverpool’s owners will look to get around paying Salah the huge wages he wants by offering a big signing-on fee.

Paris Saint-Germain did something similar this summer in completing a deal for Lionel Messi.

The Argentine superstar was given £25million fee for joining PSG, although he is still reportedly earning around £600,000-a-week.

Salah recently admitted that his intention would be to stay at Liverpool and finish his career with the club.

“If you ask me, I would love to stay until the last day of my football career, but I can’t say much about that – it’s not in my hands,” he said.

“It depends on what the club want, not on me.

“At the moment I can’t see myself ever playing against Liverpool. That would make me sad. It’s hard, I don’t want to talk about it, but it would make me really sad.

“At the moment I don’t see myself playing against Liverpool but let’s see what will happen in the future.”
