Liverpool receive transfer boost with Jurgen Klopp target ‘desperate’ to join Reds

Liverpool are in a strong position to sign Norwich defender Jamal Lewis, because the defender is desperate to join the Premier League champions. That’s according to a report in The Athletic, which claims the defender has accepted that he won’t be first-choice under Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool are expected to make Lewis one of their top targets this summer.

Klopp is keen to sign a new left-back in the window, and has identified the 22-year-old as the ideal man to come in.

Liverpool transfer guru Michael Edwards has determined that the defender will be worth £10million, and has a plan to convince the Canaries to do a deal.

However, they only plan on paying £8m up front, with an additional £2m to be paid on performance-related add-ons.

Liverpool’s squad is already one of the strongest in Europe, and there is little room for improvement.

And Lewis apparently knows that, and has accepted he will play second-fiddle to Andy Robertson at left-back.

However, he is still desperate to make the move to Anfield, according to The Athletic.

The player apparently wants to move to Liverpool to learn and continue his development under Klopp.

Norwich are reluctant to let Lewis leave this summer, despite having a ready-made replacement on their books.

The newly-relegated Canaries signed teenager Sam McCallum from Coventry in the January transfer window, but despite that they are in no rush to sell Lewis.

The 22-year-old is under contract until 2023, and Norwich know they can get more than £10m for the ace.

Due to their £20m sale of James Maddison to Leicester in 2018, that’s the benchmark they now use when it comes to player sales.

Liverpool are yet to make a move to sign Norwich, and haven’t made any calls to the Canaries yet.

They are, however, expected to take the plunge at some point, with Klopp keen to get cover for Robertson as soon as possible.

James Milner has been used in the left-back position this season, but club chiefs want a more natural defender to play a role in their Premier League title defence.

Norwich are also expected to field offers for Todd Cantwell, Max Aarons, Ben Godfrey and Emiliano Buendia this summer.
