Liverpool are signing a “Rolls Royce” player in Ben Davies, according to Preston chief Peter Ridsdale who confirmed a clause in his contract.
The Reds are set to sign the centre-back in a £2m deal from the Championship side.
Having first started playing for the club aged 11, the 25-year-old has racked up 144 appearances for Preston during his stay.
And Ridsdale, who has been with Preston for the last 10 years, was full of praise for the centre-back ahead of his move up to the Premier League.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the Deepdale chief said: “He’s an outstanding young man. Down to earth, very professional.
“He’s looked like a Rolls Royce!
“When he was in the academy, I used to go and watch him play. He stood out and was by far the best player there.
“He then went out on loan, so he’s got a lot of games under his belt. He deserves his chance – he’s a very good player.”
Risdale went on to reveal how Preston would be benefitting from Davies’ departure to Anfield.
“We’re very happy with the deal given that the alternative was him going to Celtic for nothing,” the 68-year-old added.
“We do have an investment in his future as there is a sell-on clause, so we’re very happy with the deal we’ve done with Liverpool.
“From the young man’s point of view, he’s been outstanding for us.
“To have the chance to play for a club like Liverpool I think is brilliant.”
And they are set to get a Liverpool player in return, adding: “We’ve done a deal to take on loan a young player as we were enquiring about it anyway.
“Once everything’s tied up today, we hope to get a player back on loan for the season as part of the deal.”
This player is expected to be Sepp van den Berg, who was given a hard time in the Reds U23s’ 6-3 defeat to Manchester United and new boy Amad Diallo.
