Liverpool suffer transfer blow as Virgil van Dijk replacement is ‘offered to Real Madrid’

Liverpool could face missing out on one of their potential replacements for Virgil van Dijk, with reports claiming David Alaba has been offered to Real Madrid. Alaba is believed to be a target for the Premier League champions this January or next summer.

Alaba is set to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season, if not before.

The Austrian left-back, who has molded into a centre-back due to the emergence of Alphonso Davies, is out of contract next summer and has shown no signs that he will sign a new deal.

Bayern have made numerous attempts to convince the defender to sign a new contract, but he is refusing and wants a move away.

A potential move to Liverpool has been speculated, as reports suggest the Reds have been watching him for some time.

Now, the timing could be right for the deal to happen, as the Premier League champions are believed to be on the hunt for a new defender.

Van Dijk underwent surgery last week to fix his anterior cruciate ligament, having suffered a potential season-ending injury in last month’s Merseyside derby.

The defender was left out of the club’s 25-man Premier League squad, and isn’t expected to play any further part.

Signing Alaba on a free would appear to be a simple solution to the issue, though they may now face a problem.

According to reports in Italian outlet Calciomercato, the defender has been offered to Real Madrid as his representatives look to find him a new club.

Inter Milan and Juventus are also said to be looking at making a bid for the 28-year-old.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been left with limited options at the back after Van Dijk’s injury, with Joel Matip and Fabinho also carrying knocks.

He was forced to hand a debut to 23-year-old Nathaniel Phillips for Saturday’s game against West Ham, as he opted to rest 19-year-old Rhys Williams for tomorrow’s Champions League clash against Atalanta.

Liverpool are expected to be active in the January transfer market to try and sign a new defender to provide Klopp with a fresh option, with Ajax centre-back Perr Schurrs a potential target.

The Ajax youngster has stepped into the role left vacant by Matthijs de Ligt’s 2019 move to Juventus and has been impressive so far.

He played a starring role in last month’s Champions League clash between the two sides at the Johan Cruyff ArenA, and Klopp reportedly spoke with his coaching staff about him afterwards.

However, there are numerous other teams interested, and therefore he could be pressured into making a move in January rather than waiting for the summer.
