Liverpool ‘to agree £31m Thiago transfer by next week’ as Jurgen Klopp closes in on deal

Liverpool could be set to wrap up a £31million deal for Thiago by next week, according to reports. The Bayern Munich midfielder has made it clear in meetings with the club’s hierarchy that he intends to move on this summer with just one year remaining on his deal.

Thiago moved to Germany in 2013 and has won seven Bundesliga titles with the club.

The 29-year-old has been a key figure under several bosses including Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti, Jupp Heynckes and now Hansi Flick.

Bayern are desperate to keep hold of him but CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed yesterday that Thiago wishes to move on.

“He is a top boy on and off the pitch,” Rummenigge told Bild.

“We had serious negotiations with him and fulfilled all of his wishes. But it looks like he might want to do something new again at the end of his career.

“We have never had any contact with Liverpool. If he wants to do that, we have to deal with it.

“We don’t want to lose a player for free next year. I say that very clearly.”

Now according to Varsky Sports, Liverpool are closing in on Thiago.

The report claims the Reds could wrap up a £31million deal as early as next week.

Thiago could be set to play his final game for the club tonight when Bayern take on Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal final in Berlin.

Bayern are looking to cap a fine domestic season with more silverware following their Bundesliga triumph last month.

It could also be the end of the road for Kai Havertz at Leverkusen as he looks to sign off in style.

Rummenigge has already ruled out a deal for Havertz this summer and claimed he wants to see the attacker stay put for another season.

The Allianz Arena hierarchy are keen to sell Thiago this summer if they definitely cannot convince him to stay.

That’s with the view that he is just too valuable to lose on a free transfer in 12 months time.

The same applies to David Alaba, who is also hesitating over a new deal.

Bayern did discuss the prospect of including him as part of a swap deal with Manchester City for Leroy Sane.

The winger became Bayern’s first summer signing earlier this week for £54.8million.
