Tottenham v Liverpool: Match in pictures
Liverpool’s defensive injury crisis went from bad to worse on Thursday night after it was confirmed that Fabinho and Joel Matip had suffered injuries. The Reds have been urged to dip into the transfer market and bring in a new centre-back, and Express Sport has identified four free agents they could target.
Liverpool are running out of options at the back after injuries to Fabinho and Matip.
With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both likely out for the majority of the season, they will likely be forced to play youngsters Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips.
Jordan Henderson was forced to drop from midfield to defence in order to cover, leaving a gap in the middle of the park.
Despite stating they wouldn’t look to bring anyone in this month, their hand could be forced due to the recent injuries.
With that in mind, Express Sport has identified the free agents available to the Premier League champions at the moment.
Liverpool were linked with Ezequiel Garay in the past, notably when Van Dijk suffered his ACL injury.
The Argentine is 34 now, so it’s unlikely they would offer him a long-term deal.
However, he has experience playing at the top level, with over 200 appearances in La Liga.
Garay would add some well-needed experience at the back, and could help to mentor Williams through his development.
Former Celtic defender Jozo Simunovic is still available after leaving the Scottish champions last year.
The Croatian left last summer after making more than 126 appearances for the Bhoys.
He won the Scottish Premiership five times in a row, but left last year at the expiry of his contract.
The 26-year-old is still fairly young, so it wouldn’t be the worst thing for the Reds to give him a contract beyond the end of the season.
He has experience of winning domestic titles, and would therefore be able to assist the Reds with their defence of the Premier League title.
Neven Subotic has somewhat gone into obscurity since leaving Borussia Dortmund.
The German centre-back made 263 appearances for Dortmund throughout his time there, but hasn’t been able to stay put since leaving.
He was last seen playing for Turkish side Denizlispor, but he departed in January.
Subotic could provide another senior option for Liverpool at the back, considering his history of playing at the top level.
Cedric Yambere is still available after leaving Saudi Professional League side Al-Ettifaq.
The 30-year-old departed Al-Ettifaq earlier this season and is still looking for his next club.
He’s past his prime now at 30, and has the ability to play in the middle of midfield as well as at the back.
The defender has history in the French league, having played over 50 times for both Dijon and Bordeaux.
