Liverpool must add similar depth to their squad that Manchester City have, according to Reds legend Phil Thompson. The Sky Sports pundit believes his former club should sign RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner to provide competition to the current front three. Werner is reportedly open to a summer move to Anfield but the Merseyside club are not prepared to activate his £52million release clause at this current time.
Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are once again Liverpool’s top scorers this season, having netted 47 goals between them in all competitions.
Thompson hopes the addition of a player such as Werner would motivate, rather than upset, the trio.
And he says it is a signing Liverpool need to make to ensure they continue to battle it out with City in the years to come.
“I would like to think [Werner signing] would challenge them,” Thompson told Sky Sports News.

“Yes it might sort of make them think ‘oh, what’s coming in here?’ but being a manager you have to think ahead.
“You have to plan ahead for whatever might unfold.
“I don’t think it would upset the players, I would like to think it would give them a challenge, maybe it would pick them up.
“I think we do need a few more goals.

- Liverpool selling one player this summer could upset Mohamed Salah
“We do get a lot of goals from our front three but is there a realistic centre-forward in there? I think Werner would bring that to our team.
“You look at Manchester City, they make sure they’ve got two top-class players for each position.
“That is what Liverpool need and I think Werner would give us that.
“I think with the lure of Jurgen Klopp, I think that would tick the box for him.
- Liverpool assured Timo Werner is more valuable than Jadon Sancho
“I really, at this moment in time, I think he would be a fantastic signing, something that we do actually need.”
Meanwhile, Thompson’s former team-mate Steve Nicol says he would sign Werner ahead of Borussia Dortmund and England winger Jadon Sancho.
Sancho, who has impressed again in the Bundesliga this season, is a top target for Manchester United.
“I would go for Timo Werner,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
“Werner basically can play all across the front line. Left, right and centre forward.
“Sancho could play left or right but I don’t think he could play up top.
“For that main reason, I would take Timo Werner.”
