After injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, Liverpool have been left without a senior centre-back this month.
Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have had to drop back there from midfield while rookies Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have also come in.
It has led to intense transfer speculation that the Reds will dip into the transfer window to alleviate their concerns.
Several players have been linked including Brighton star Ben White, RB Leipzig's Dayot Upamecano, Schalke ace Ozan Kabak and Lille defender Sven Botman.
But the Premier League champions have had problems with all four.

He played every match for the Elland Road outfit during their promotion campaign and was awarded with a spot in the Championship Team of the Year.
But with the Seagulls locked in a relegation battle, letting go of one of their best players would be non-sensical on their behalf – but a summer move has not been put off.
Perhaps the most strongly linked with a January move, Liverpool first made contact with Schalke over a transfer in November.
Initial discussions were held but that was as far as it went after the Bundesliga club told the Reds to fork out €25m (£22.6m).
The Turkey international now looks set to move elsewhere, with AC Milan also interested in the 20-year-old's services.
Georginio Wijnaldum and Liverpool hit contract stalemate as star's latest stance emerges
Liverpool officials have been bewildered and, frankly, annoyed by links to the Dutchman and have no idea where the rumours came from.
They suspect that their name is being used by Lille to drive up the price, a similar tactic they used with Nicolas Pepe that eventually saw him join Arsenal for £72m.
