Lucky Lionel Messi almost decapitated on Argentina’s World Cup bus parade

Lionel Messi and his Argentina team-mates had a lucky escape while celebrating their World Cup triumph.

The new champions of the world have returned home to continue their celebrations after lifting the trophy in Qatar on Sunday (December 18). Upon landing back in South America they immediately boarded an open top bus.

Despite it being the middle of the night in Argentina, the public lined the streets to give their stars a heroes welcome. But the joyous scenes very nearly turned to disaster for Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, Leandro Paredes, Angel Di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi.

They were all sat on the roof of the back of the bus, with Messi holding the World Cup between his legs, when they were almost caught out by an overhead cable.

All five had to quickly duck out of the way to avoid serious injury, with the possibilities not worth thinking about. Paredes was so close to the cable that the baseball cap he was wearing was taken clean off his head.

Despite the incident potentially being serious, the bus carried on as normal with Messi and Co not flinching afterwards. They headed to the Argentine Football Association (AFA) training centre, where Messi posed for a picture in bed with the trophy.

And after finally getting some shut eye the squad have returned for another parade through the streets of Buenos Aires. The government has declared the day a national Bank Holiday to allow fans to take part in the celebrations.

Thousands upon thousands of supporters have surrounded the famous Obelisk monument, with some climbing up trees to get a better view.

Further events have been planned throughout the week to celebrate the nation's third World Cup victory, and hopefully there won't be anymore near misses like the cable incident.
