Luke Ayling’s red card for reckless two-footed lunge mystifies Leeds fans

Leeds United fans were left with hands on heads after Luke Ayling's bizarre two-footed lunge on Gabriel Martinelli robbed them of any chance of a comeback against Arsenal.

A quickfire double from Eddie Nketiah inside the first 10 minutes left Jesse Marsch's side with an absolute mountain to climb, but with relegation staring them dead in the face, giving up was out of the question.

But with less than half-an-hour gone Ayling made a difficult task an almost impossible one after recklessly getting himself sent off after needlessly flying into Martinelli by the corner flag – leaving Leeds supporters on social media absolutely mystified.

"What the f*** is Ayling doing?? There was literally no need. So called 'experienced player'. Wow," one fan tweeted.

"Straight up ridiculous, show some fight yes but seriously mind boggling what goes through his mind and a 3 game ban to boot, no excuses," wrote another, while a third grumbled: "That's us relegated thanks to him."

Gary Neville added: "Losing [Ayling] for the next games is really problematic. He’s Leeds energy in a lot of games," while Jamie Carragher labelled the 30-year-old an "idiot".

"I love Luke but what an idiot. The lack of professionalism for his own teammates and what this could mean going forward," Carragher said in the Sky Sports studio.

"To do that, put your teammates down to 10 men, you miss the last three games of the season. That might be the last game he ever plays in the Premier League."

Diego Llorente managed to grab a goal for the visitors mid-way through the second half to set up a tense finish to proceedings, but they failed to find an equaliser. Worse still, Leeds dropped into the relegation zone following Everton's emphatic 2-1 victory over Leicester City.

Oh dear, Luke. Oh dear.
