Luton boss Jones describes Huddersfield fans as an 'absolute disgrace'

‘If that was my wife, I’d be disgusted’: Luton boss Nathan Jones describes Huddersfield fans as an ‘absolute disgrace’ after he was goaded – including by ‘a mother with a little kid’ – during pitch invasion after the Terriers reached play-off final

Luton Town manager Nathan Jones labelled Huddersfield supporters an ‘absolute disgrace’ after he was goaded following his team’s Championship play-off semi-final defeat.

Thousands of fans poured onto the field at the John Smith’s Stadium after the final whistle confirmed Huddersfield’s 2-1 aggregate win and passage to the final at Wembley.

There was no time for either Jones or the Luton players to get out the way with the Welsh manager complaining he was subjected to abuse and obscene gestures from Terries fans.

Thousands ran onto the pitch to celebrate Huddersfield’s play-off semi-final won over Luton

A section of Huddersfield fans also goaded and threw objects at the Luton fans in one corner of the stadium after a late strike by Jordan Rhodes took them through.

Jones said: ‘The fans were an absolute disgrace… the fans were an absolute disgrace. How one of us hasn’t been (injured).

‘Stewards? I don’t know why they turned up… The fans were an absolute disgrace. But we won’t complain, football fans are like that. Some are idiots.

‘They didn’t paint Huddersfield Town as a good club in terms of how they were. They have won the game, go celebrate with your players. Go and celebrate something wonderful.

‘Instead they were more concerned with obscene gestures. I have seen a mother with a little kid… If that was my wife, I’d be disgusted.

Huddersfield will play either Nottingham Forest or Sheffield United in the final on May 29

‘They approached me and abused me. They have done stuff to me. Some were okay and congratulated us. But they all did not paint Huddersfield Town in a good light after that.

‘But look, that’s individuals. Not everyone will be pure Huddersfield fans.

‘They have turned up tonight and that is probably the biggest crowd Huddersfield have had this season, so a lot of them might not be true Huddersfield fans, you never know.’

He added: ‘I don’t understand. Go celebrate with your players, go celebrate something big. They were more concerned with taunting and abusing our fans and filming it. That logic I don’t get.

Jones said he didn’t understand why some fans decided to goad Luton rather than celebrate

Jordan Rhodes scored in the 82nd minute to send Huddersfield to Championship play-off final

‘I literally saw a woman and some of the things she was doing. It can’t be ‘northern’, surely.’

After last Friday’s first leg at Kenilworth Road ended 1-1, it took 82 minutes to break a stubborn deadlock on Monday night.

But Rhodes broke away to convert a free-kick from fellow substitute Sorba Thomas at the back post.

Huddersfield, who were last in the Premier League in 2019, have the chance to return there when they take on either Nottingham Forest or Sheffield United in the Wembley final on May 29.
