England and Manchester United fans’ criticism of Harry Maguire has gone too far, according to Gabriel Agbonlahor. Former Aston Villa captain Agbonlahor has called on supporters to give full backing to the defender after a torrid few months.

Maguire drew plenty of criticism for his performances in a United shirt last season. He was then booed by some England fans during a friendly against the Ivory Coast at Wembley in March.

He was also booed by a section of United fans on their pre-season tour to Australia in July. The 29-year-old has found himself largely out of the picture under Erik ten Hag this season, despite remaining club captain at Old Trafford.

Maguire’s selection in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad was controversial following a lack of minutes on the pitch. But he put in a strong showing in England’s opening match at the tournament against Iran before illness forced him off in the second half.

Agbonlahor claims some people want to see Maguire fail and has called for that to end ahead of England’s match against the USA on Friday evening. Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “The thing for me with Harry Maguire is that he has been poor for Manchester United in certain games, you can’t argue with that fact.

“But when you’re going away pre-season, I think they went to America or Australia or somewhere, and you’ve got fans in the stadium booing you, that’s too far. That’s just people looking at social media and being sheep.

“Harry Maguire’s had some poor games but he’s had some decent games for England, he’s not let England down. Get behind him. I’m sure people out there, pundits, media fans, would have wanted Harry Maguire to have a shocker of a game against Iran.

“He had a commanding game. Yes, he could have done better for the goal, switched off.

“But get behind him, get behind the players, don’t have one player that you pick on and want him to do badly. If he’s had a bad game, you can be critical.

“But people go too far with Harry Maguire. I know for a good four, five, six months he’s not been at his best and people have gone too far with it.

“When he’s playing for your country and you know you need to give players that confidence in games, why are you hoping that he has a bad game against Iran?”
