Man City Cancelo 'wanted by Barcelona in player-swap deal for Semedo'

Manchester City right-back Joao Cancelo ‘wanted by Barcelona in shock player-swap deal for Nelson Semedo’… after just one season with Premier League club

  • Manchester City right-back Joao Cancelo could be on his way to Barcelona
  • The 25-year-old flop could be part of a player-swap deal for Nelson Semedo
  • Cancelo has struggled to make an impact since joining City from Juventus
  • He still has five years left on his deal at City whilst Semedo’s deal runs until 2022

Manchester City right-back Joao Cancelo has caught the interest of Barcelona and could be involved in a player-swap deal with Nelson Semedo this summer.

The 25-year-old defender joined the Premier League champions from Juventus last season in a deal that saw Brazilian full-back Danilo go the other way and join the Serie A side.

Cancelo has failed to make an impact in Pep Guardiola’s team and could be on the move yet again after just one season at the Etihad Stadium.

The potential deal, reported by The Telegraph, would see Nelson Semedo join Man City

According to The Telegraph, Barcelona are preparing to offer City a straight swap deal for their right-back Nelson Semedo.

Both Portuguese internationals have endured different campaigns this season, with Semedo enjoying his time at the Nou Camp making 29 appearances in all competitions.

Cancelo has made just eight appearances for Guardiola’s side and is second-choice to Kyle Walker.

City boss Guardiola would let Cancelo leave the club but he wants a replacement for him

City are willing to let Cancelo leave the club this summer but want a replacement who can continue to provide competition with Walker for the right-back spot.

The former Juventus defender still has five years left on his huge contract with the Premier League club, whilst Semedo’s deal with Barcelona runs out in 2022.

Due to the impact on club finances due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Telegraph also suggested that there will be plenty more player-swap deals this summer with clubs less willing to spend high amounts of money on talent.

Instead, clubs will explore the option of straight swaps to freshen up squads and limit the financial burden that a regular transfer window may cause.
