Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decides David De Gea’s role for next season

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will keep faith with David De Gea as his No 1 for next season, according to reports. The Spain international has struggled for consistency this season. But, despite the fact that Dean Henderson is primed to return from his loan spell at Sheffield United, it appears De Gea will be given chances to consolidate his place in his manager’s line up.

De Gea is one of the longest-serving players at Manchester United, having been at the club ever since transferring from Atletico Madrid back in 2011.

Over the years he’s been a crucial club servant, helping the Red Devils win the FA Cup and EFL Cup under Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho respectively – as well as the Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

De Gea has struggled for consistency this season, though, with the United star making a series of high-profile mistakes.

One came in the defeat to Watford back in December, while the Spaniard was also at fault in the 1-1 draw with Everton.

Despite that, though, ESPN say Solskjaer will allow De Gea to stay as the club’s No 1 next season.

  • Ed Woodward has private concern about Man Utd

And that means that Henderson is likely to be loaned out again.

The shot-stopper has been in remarkable form for Sheffield United this season, helping the Blades push for a spot in next season’s Europa League.

Henderson doesn’t want to deputise for De Gea, though, amid interest from the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and PSG.

And United are set to loan him out in order to provide him with regular football, all while keeping De Gea happy.

Amid his inconsistency, the 29-year-old has been tipped to leave for the likes of Real Madrid and PSG – who are both long-term admirers.

But, speaking recently, De Gea insisted he wanted to stay at United for many years to come.

  • Man Utd have another David Beckham and Wayne Rooney on their hands

“I’m getting older. Just to be a part of this club is amazing,” said the veteran.

“So imagine, 10 years, it’s like a dream. It’s great to play games with this club, so I hope I can be here more years, many years.”

De Gea also expressed a belief that United had improved considerably before the coronavirus crisis brought football to a crashing halt.

“I think the whole team improved a lot,” he added.

“We were in a good moment. I think we were in very good, top form.

“We didn’t concede many goals and, of course, with Bruno he brings a lot of quality. He’s a clever player, a top midfielder.

“The team improved with him and it was a pity that everything stopped because we were in a good moment.

“But hopefully with some players that were injured will be fit when it all starts again, so it will be a good challenge for everyone.”

United are currently blessed with goalkeeping options.

As well as De Gea and Romero the club also have Sergio Romero, who has been a capable pair of hands ever since his arrival in 2015.

They have Joel Pereira coming back from his loan spell at Hearts at the end of the season.

And United coaching staff think highly of youngster Matej Kovar, who made the bench in the Europa League earlier in the season.
