Man Utd boss Ten Hag ‘needs’ emergency Rashford meeting after Keane rage

Football Digest: Man Utd with work to do after sluggish start

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been told that he “needs to talk” to Marcus Rashford regarding his new role as a number nine, as Red Devils hero Dimitar Berbatov insisted that the team needed to “f****** wake up” after their lacklustre start to the Premier League season.

Rashford has started games against Wolves and Tottenham up front as new signing Rasmus Hojlund remains out of action through injury and is yet to make his United debut. It was a role the England man often occupied last season, but his main contributions came on the left flank.

United icon Roy Keane took aim at Rashford following the defeat at Spurs for his attitude as a striker, with Berbatov seemingly agreeing as he could “understand” why the 25-year-old may not be best pleased with his role to begin the season.

“I think we all know that he prefers to play on the wing, going inside, cutting in and scoring and doing everything that he can do with his quick feet,” Berbatov told Betfair. “Manchester United need to fill the position of a striker, Rashford probably doesn’t like playing as a nine. Him and Ten Hag need to talk about it.

“The manager might explain to him that he needs to fill the boots of striker at the moment. As much as you may not like it, you need to try your best to do it. It’s probably not working out so far. Rasmus Hojlund needs to come back and be integrated into the team injury free, you can’t rush it. They’ll get the ball in the box to him and leave Rashford to do what he can do, going from the wings to use the space to cut inside, cross or shoot.

“At the moment, when a player plays out of position, I can understand why they might not happy because you know that your strong qualities are not going to show and you’re going to suffer because of that.”

Berbatov also suggested that “United need to f*****g wake up as soon as possible” after Keane slated Rashford for his performance, as he is yet to score a goal in the Red Devils’ opening two games.

“You’re bringing on Anthony Martial and these players – you might as well bring on Frank Stapleton and Norman Whiteside,” Keane told Sky Sports. “Martial’s not going to get you out of trouble again.

“Rashford played through the middle again – usual stuff. He’s like a child up there. He’s obviously not happy playing through the middle and his body language, his first few touches in the game, suggested ‘I don’t want to play up through the middle’.”
