Man Utd can sign Serhou Guirassy to partner Rasmus Hojlund for bargain fee

Marcus Rashford entered the new season on the back of his career-best 30-goal 2022/23 campaign, Manchester United recruited a £72million striker, and their £85m addition had a year to settle in. One of the last things you would’ve expected Erik ten Hag’s side to struggle for was goals.

But it’s a significant issue that has contributed to United’s disappointing start to Ten Hag’s second season at the helm.

The Red Devils have scored just 11 goals in their opening nine Premier League games, finding more joy in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

But Casemiro is the club’s top goalscorer with four strikes, and Scott McTominay is level with Rasmus Hojlund behind the Brazil captain on three.

Hojlund has shown glimpses of true quality since his Old Trafford arrival and isn’t near the finished article, aged 20.

However, he has yet to score in six Premier League appearances, albeit with a measly xG worth 1.3, suggesting his chances haven’t exactly been gilt-edged.

And Ten Hag could be tempted to move for attacking reinforcements in the January transfer window for a second successive year.

Earlier this year, Ten Hag had to react to Cristiano Ronaldo’s explosive departure, but the Glazer family didn’t hand him substantial funds to find a suitable replacement.

It left the Dutchman signing Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley, which went as well as many predicted when news of the outlandish move broke.

Hojlund was the chosen one in the summer and is hoped to spearhead Ten Hag’s attack for years to come. But he needs help, and a bargain solution has surfaced in Germany.

Serhou Guirassy has made headlines this season, scoring 15 goals in nine games for VfB after joining permanently from Rennes in an £8m deal.

The 27-year-old netted 13 times in 26 appearances on loan last term as Stuttgart finished 16th in the Bundesliga and reached the DFB Pokal semi-finals.

But he has hit another level in the current campaign, and Fabrizio Romano reports he is available in the January transfer for just £15m.

Guirassy has a release clause that can be triggered this winter or next summer, which is bound to attract attention from European heavyweights if he continues his rich vein of form.

And Ten Hag could target him to join Anthony Martial in providing competition for Hojlund or to replace the Frenchman, who is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season.
