Man Utd chief Ed Woodward told he made Bruno Fernandes transfer mistake

Manchester United signed Bruno Fernandes in the January transfer window but Dimitar Berbatov thinks the club made a mistake by not signing the Portuguese ace earlier. The Red Devils were linked with Fernandes last summer but opted against making a raid.

Fernandes has been sensational since making the switch from Sporting Lisbon.

The 25-year-old has netted five goals and provided three assists in his eight Premier League appearances so far.

United are competing with Leicester, Chelsea and Wolves for a top-four place and Champions League qualification but Berbatov thinks Fernandes should have joined sooner.

The former striker told the Mirror: “You can argue that the club may have made a mistake by not signing him earlier, but you never know what is going to happen and maybe if they got him earlier he might not have been quite ready.

“I think everything happened at the right moment and we can see the result of it now with the way that Fernandes is producing great football.

“If Pogba stays then I think their partnership will only get better, you can see they already have something going with the way they look for each other on the pitch and where they are passing.

“There is clearly a great future for both of them at United.”

Berbatov also believes United may have found their next Cristiano Ronaldo in Mason Greenwood.

He explained: “Greenwood, against Brighton, was like Ronaldo.

“His left foot is unbelievable along with his vision, I don’t think many signings are needed to take United to that next level.

“They need to be really classy players to make the difference, someone who is going to be better than the current squad of players.”

United return to action against Bournemouth at 3pm on Saturday in the Premier League.

A win will see them leapfrog Chelsea into the top four before the Blues face Watford in the evening (8pm).

  • Man Utd news: Ed Woodward taking Jadon Sancho transfer gamble

United boss Solskjaer has said his side are confident going into the contest against the Cherries ona 15-game unbeaten run.

He said: “Well it’s been a while since of course we’ve been on a run like this.

“When I first came in the run was also a good one, but now, definitely we are feeling confident, we are feeling in good form and they should be because they’ve worked so hard over the lockdown period and they’re just getting their sharpness and match fitness back.

“And of course, when you perform like you have done, the Sheffield United and Brighton games I thought they were really good, so they should be confident.”
