Manchester United have been told they should appoint Erik ten Hag instead of Mauricio Pochettino as their next permanent manager. Pochettino has long been linked with the Old Trafford job and is the favourite to replace current interim Ralf Rangnick. But former England striker Darren Bent believes Ten Hag would be the better appointment.

Ten Hag is also linked with the permanent job at United.

The Dutchman has built a strong reputation as Ajax boss in recent seasons, winning two Eredivisie titles.

He led the club to the Champions League semi-final in 2019, losing dramatically to Pochettino’s Tottenham.

Ajax won all six of their group stage matches earlier this season to set up a favourable last-16 tie with Benfica.

French outlet Le Parisien claimed earlier this week that United interim boss Rangnick would prefer the club appoint Ten Hag instead of Pochettino.

Rangnick will take up a consultancy role at United for two seasons after he leaves his post as manager.

Bent has not been impressed with Pochettino and his handling of superstar players at Paris Saint-Germain.

Lionel Messi has struggled to reach the heights expected of him following his arrival on a free transfer from Barcelona.

And Bent thinks the style of play of Ten Hag would be better for United.

Bent told talkSPORT: “I would probably go Ten Hag. I’d probably give him the nod, just. Just because I’ve seen Pochettino over here.

“He did great things at Spurs, getting them to the Champions League final, but I like watching Ajax, the football they play.

“Dealing with big egos, I know Ten Hag hasn’t really got the biggest at Ajax, but you look at the way Pochettino is dealing with the big egos at PSG – I wouldn’t say it’s going particularly well.

“Listen, they’re going to win the French league, they win it every year other than last year by the way, they always win the French league.

“They’ve won the French Cup but it’s the Champions League which you get judged on.

“Do I make them one of the favourites? I don’t think they’re going to win it.

“I think there are three or four teams better than PSG to go on and win it.

“So I’d probably opt for Ten Hag more than Pochettino, I would.”
