Man Utd duo singled out for blame as Glazers defended ahead of Bayern clash

Manchester United owners the Glazers are not solely to blame for the team’s performances on the pitch, claims Ally McCoist. The Rangers legend believes players must start to take more responsibility for their performances, naming Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez as two examples.

United suffered their third Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday. They were humbled 3-1 by Brighton at Old Trafford, with a Hannibal Mejbri goal saving some of the Red Devils’ dignity.

Erik ten Hag’s side sit 13th in the table, with just six points to their name after five matches. Many believe they were lucky in the two wins they have managed against Wolves and Nottingham Forest.

The Glazer family are never far from criticism and it ramps up with every defeat. United legend Gary Neville again laid blame at the Americans’ door following the weekend’s defeat.

However, McCoist says it is wrong to say the Glazers are entirely to blame. He believes Casemiro and Martinez should have done better for two of Brighton’s goals, something the owners cannot do anything about.

McCoist said on talkSPORT: “There’s one or two problems at Manchester United, some bigger than others. The Glazers are obviously a problem but to be fair, it’s not the Glazers who are dropping Welbeck for that run from the middle of the park, that was Casemiro.

“It’s not the Glazers who are diving into a tackle to stop Gross for the second goal, that was Martinez. I tend to agree that I think the players need to take more responsibility.

“However, I look at United, I look at Chelsea and I look at a lot of big clubs, and they must be scratching their heads at the difference of the level of recruitment of the team that beat them on Saturday, Brighton.”

It doesn’t get any easier for United as they travel to Bayern Munich in their first Champions League group game on Wednesday. Bayern have extra firepower up front this season after signing Harry Kane in the summer, a player United were linked with.

Ten Hag has outlined how his team can cause the Bundesliga champions problems. He said: “Bayern Munich I think is one of the favourites to win the Champions League so we have to be good there.

“But I think I have already explained what we need there – we need character, belief, resilience, determination, absolutely.”
