Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is seemingly taking solace in the fact Manchester United can still better their start to last season despite Sunday’s defeat at home Arsenal – leaving the Red Devils faithful furious.

United slumped to their third loss of the new campaign against Mikel Arteta ’s men, with a second-half penalty from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang enough to hand the Gunners their first win at Old Trafford since 2006.

It proved a miserable evening for the hosts, who failed to build on a sensational 5-0 victory against RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

But after the defeat, Solskjaer highlighted the fact his side can still earn their third win of the season in quicker fashion than last term.

“We need to get points on the board,” he said.

“We didn’t get our third win until the 10th game last year, we’ve played six this year.”

It’s fair to say Solskjaer’s comments did not go down well with United fans, who took to Twitter to hit out at the Norwegian.

One wrote: “Oh! God help me with this kind of ridiculous comment by the manager [of] the third biggest club in the world. Is our club standard 60 points [Ed] Woodward. Just asking. Is this the mandate now”.

Another commented: “Wow, he really said that. I’m done.”

“This is Manchester United btw, not Cardiff City,” said a third.

“Did you win any trophy last year?” asked another.

While one simply sighed: “Oh dear”.

Solskjaer admitted his side “didn’t turn up” in Sunday’s defeat against Arsenal, telling BBC’s Match of the Day: “That's football for you. It goes up and down.

“We didn't turn up, especially in the first half. That's what we have to address because we know these boys can be so good.

“We knew that this was the big game this week. And unfortunately in the first half we didn't play well enough.

“Second half we played better, we never seemed to have to defend too much. But when we did have to, we were too slow and gave away the penalty.”
