Man Utd fans in brutal Harry Maguire dig to Erik ten Hag after Aston Villa draw

Manchester United fans in Australia let their feelings known about captain Harry Maguire again as the Red Devils continued their pre-season tour.

The England international has been consistently booed by supporters when his name has been announced in matches and every time he has received the ball. However, manager Erik Ten Hag has been vocal in his support for the central defender.

And that continued to be the case against Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon. United showed plenty of promise in the opening 45 minutes and headed into the half-time break 2-0 up, but they threw away their lead in the second half and drew the match 2-2.

There were plenty of things to consider for United supporters to consider after the match, though some seemed fixated on letting their newly-appointed boss that he has not been forgiven for his underwhelming spell at United since joining the club in 2019. According to the Manchester Evening News, whilst Ten Hag was attempting to complete his post-match press conference, fans called out ‘sell Maguire’ from their seats nearby.

Shouts regarding Frenkie de Jong were also heard, with supporters pleading United the club to finally get a deal over the line for the Barcelona midfielder. Ten Hag and his recruitment team are working to complete a thorough reshaping of their squad, though Maguire remains at the heart of his plans despite his shaky displays this season.

Ten Hag has reunited with Lisandro Martinez at Old Trafford, instructing the club to pursue the former Ajax star after working with the versatile defender at Ajax. And it is reported that the Argentine could form a centre-back partnership with Maguire rather than Raphael Varane.

Ten Hag has spoken previously about how he believes that Maguire will be able to silence his critics, including those in the stands, by putting in quality performances consistently. Asked about the boos after they were heard against Crystal Palace earlier this pre-season, he said: “Maguire, we heard but you see, if you perform, it slows down.

“I think he, the team, impressed by the way we played. I don’t think it’s the [thing] to find out if I understand it. It’s about how we can change it.

“So it’s the team and Harry himself by performing. That is what we’re working on, that is the only focus.” It remains to be seen if Maguire can continue to answer the questions asked of him by Ten Hag in the upcoming season or if criticism levels continue to grow.
