Man Utd forcing Dean Henderson to stay beyond January over David de Gea fears

Manchester United are said to be blocking Dean Henderson from leaving in January due to fears over David de Gea.

Henderson, 24, has made just the one appearance for the Red Devils this season which came in the 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham in September.

He was expected to be in contention for the number one shirt in the summer but a bout of Covid kept him out for an extended period of time and de Gea has been one of United's better performers since then.

The goalkeeper's severe lack of game time had him hoping of securing a loan move in the winter transfer window.

But according to the Daily Mail, he will not be allowed to leave Old Trafford because of concern's over De Gea's fitness and performance.

United are said to be mindful that the Spaniard could pick up an injury or suffer another loss of form after letting in soft goals against Atalanta and Manchester City.

De Gea's drop off last season allowed Henderson to break through and make 26 appearances in all competitions.

If the back-up shot stopper were to leave, then the only alternative would be third-choice 'keeper Tom Heaton.

The latest report claims Henderson will be eager for the exit door at the end of the season if he cannot reclaim the number one spot.

He is very conscious about his promising career stuttering, especially because he has also lost his place in Gareth Southgate's England squad.

This international break is the third in a row he has not been called up for after pulling out of Euro 2020 with a hip injury.

With the 2022 Qatar World Cup barely a year away, Henderson wants to get back ahead of Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale in the pecking order and compete with Jordan Pickford once more.

He has just one cap to his name which came a year ago today in a friendly with the Republic of Ireland.

Henderson is said to be accepting that he is unlikely to get a transfer in January.

He has roughly three-and-a-half years left on his United contract which runs out in the summer of 2025.
