Man Utd have Paul Pogba role theory after Chelsea, PSG and Newcastle snubs

Manchester United are starting to believe that a cameo role may be best for Paul Pogba, according to reports. The France international has struggled for starting opportunities in recent times. And, with his contract expiring next summer, the 27-year-old’s Old Trafford future is up in the air amid links to Real Madrid and Juventus.

Manchester United have seen Pogba struggle early on this season.

The France international was abject in the 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on the opening day of the season, being withdrawn for Donny van de Beek during that match.

Pogba was also one of the worst players on the pitch as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were battered 6-1 by Tottenham, though stayed on the pitch that match.

In recent times, however, the 27-year-old has found himself benched.

He was snubbed for the 4-1 victory over Newcastle last weekend, while Scott McTominay and Fred were again picked in his place for the 2-1 Champions League win over PSG last week.

And, against Chelsea on Saturday night, United decided to again leave their £89million midfielder on the bench.

Now, The Athletic say United are starting to believe that a cameo role suits Pogba.

Though he’s not started any of the last three matches he’s impressed coming off the bench, notably providing the assist for Marcus Rashford’s winner against PSG.

And whether he can change United’s mounting opinion of himself is something only time will tell.

Pogba’s long-term future at the club is currently up in the air, with Real Madrid and Juventus continuing to keep tabs on the 2018 World Cup winner ahead of the January transfer window.

The France international has already admitted it would be his dream to play for Madrid, insisting that’s the case on multiple occasions over the last 18 months.

But Juventus remain interested in bringing their former midfielder back to Turin, with Andrea Pirlo’s side struggling in midfield at present.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer opened up on his decision to keep benching Pogba after the club’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Saturday.

And the Norwegian said: “When you’ve got good players it’s a nice challenge and a decision to make when you’ve got good players on the bench that can come on and impact the game.

“I think Paul, all three games this week, he’s really come on and made a very positive impact.

“He’s been out for a while with coronavirus this summer, so he’s getting better and better and maybe more his shape.

“Maybe I was unfair to him starting him that early in the first few games but he’s coming on and he’s done great when he’s come on.”

Former United star Patrice Evra feels Solskjaer has some big decisions to make going forward.

“I think now, Ole [Gunnar Solskaer] will get to a point where he has to make big decisions,” Evra told Sky Sports.

“Centre-back because, I’m sorry, Axel Tuanzebe was amazing. He put Neymar and Mbappe in his pocket, he deserved to play!

“Are we going to stay with a back four, will we go to a three? We will see, I know Ole has big decisions to make.

“Like Van de Beek, Paul [Pogba] on the bench, it’s a good time for United though I would say.”
