Erik ten Hag reviews Man Utd's win against Fulham
Edwin van der Sar is unlikely to seal a return to his former club Manchester United after announcing his departure from Ajax. The former goalkeeper worked closely with Erik ten Hag while they were employed by the Eredivisie giants last season before Ten Hag took over at Old Trafford and he had been linked with a reunion in Manchester, but reports suggest the Glazers are unlikely to make another approach to appoint the club icon.
The ex-Netherlands international joined Ajax’s board in 2012 and became their CEO four years later. But he resigned from his position this week, citing a need to step back from the stress of his day-to-day job to recuperate.
“We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period,” Van der Sar said in a club statement. “I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things.
“It doesn’t feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign.”

The 52-year-old is now free to be approached after leaving his role, but according to The Mirror, United won’t be making a move to snap up Van der Sar.
He is required to work a notice period until the end of August under the terms of his contract with Ajax, which would rule him out for the majority of the transfer window and start of next season.
The possible sale of the club is currently being negotiated with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim’s The Nine Two Foundation consortium, and while talks continue, the Glazer family are ‘unlikely’ to approach Van der Sar to take on a role in the United hierarchy.

Van der Sar had been linked with a board position at United after his stellar work at Ajax coincided with a run of four Eredivisie titles, reaching the Champions League semi-final and Europa League final in 2017.
However, he has already turned down the chance to link up with Ten Hag once last year as he felt he still had something to achieve in the Netherlands.
“It’s never been that close,” he told The Times back in October. “I have a good relationship with the board and I had a fantastic six years in Manchester, but I’m not finished here yet.”
Given Sheikh Jassim’s preference for former United players to work at the club, a future move cannot be ruled out. But Van der Sar, who won 11 trophies and made 266 appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson with the Red Devils, won’t be one of those joining just yet.
