Man Utd ‘identify Sir Alex’s pal Ancelotti’ as short-term pick for next manager

Manchester United will make a surprise attempt to secure Carlo Ancelotti on a short-term basis if Mauricio Pochettino rules himself out of contention.

A report in ESPN has suggested that the Italian has a “close personal relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson”, a figure who United’s new CEO, Richard Arnold, has spoken to before about who to bring in as Ralf Rangnick’s successor.

The current plan is to secure a manager on their shortlist who they can bring in to take over the German, who is supposed to take up a consultancy role in the summer.

The shortlist features Pochettino, a man admired by Ferguson, but if the Argentine sticks with Paris Sait-Germain and snubs a move to Old Trafford, then the current Real Madrid boss would be an ideal candidate.

It’s thought that Ancelotti would be the right person who could come in and have an immediate impact in the short term, owing to his experience in the Premer League with Chelsea and to a lesser extent Everton.

The 62-yea-old is also no stranger to dealing with high-profile names, having previously coached such sides as Juventus, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Napoli, and PSG.

Rangnick has also indicated that he is open to staying in charge for another season, but results would surely have to improve for that to happen.

"We are now conducting a thorough process for the appointment of a new permanent manager who will take charge this summer, with the objective to get us back to challenging for those domestic and European titles," football director John Murtough said at a fans' forum that took place last week.

It could be classed as a postponement of United’s initial plan, but the club are prepared to play the long game if it means getting their top target through the door.

Furthermore, they have hit some snags with some of their first choices: Pochettino is now linked with a switch to Real Madrid to replace Ancelotti, and Erik ten Hag has reservations about the running of things at Old Trafford compared to his current club Ajax.

It also appears that another target, Luis Enrique, wishes to stay with Spain until at least the World Cup has concluded.

Ancelotti has Madrid at the top of the La Liga table but encountered objection from fans after the side’s display against PSG in their Champions League round-of-16 first leg, which was a 1-0 loss.
