Gary Neville has told of his confusion about how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is treating Donny van de Beek. The Dutchman was signed from Ajax in the summer but has failed to make an impression at Manchester United, struggling to break past Scott McTominay, Fred and Paul Pogba.
Viewed as a potential replacement for Pogba, van de Beek appeared to be a shrewd signing having been one of Ajax’s star men.
But the move has worked out as hoped, with the midfielder starting just two games in the Premier League and being left on the bench on 12 occasions in the top-flight.
The 23-year-old has mainly found his game time coming in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, but even when he has played, he has not shown enough to break into Solskajer’s main plans.
In fact, after scoring 10 goals and notching 11 assists in all competitions in his final season in Holland, the midfielder’s numbers have plummeted to just one goal and one assist in his first year at United.

But Solskjaer has come under fire for the way he has utilised van de Beek, both for failing to hand him enough minutes and for playing him out of position.
The Dutchman has been played in a variety of positions so far this season, mainly as an attacking midfielder, but also at left wing and in defensive midfield.
The failure to gain any kind of momentum in the side has also seen van de Beek become increasingly linked with a departure after just one underwhelming season at Old Trafford.
Now, United legend Neville has spoken of his confusion about van de Beek’s situation and revealed his concern about the player’s mental state.

In a Twitter Q&A, Neville was asked “What do you think of the mis-use of Donny van de Beek?” by one United fan.
“I’m baffled by what’s happening with him. He must be really low,” Neville wrote in reply.
This is not the first time that Neville has stated his confusion about van de Beek’s status at United, admitting in January that he did not know why he was signed.
“It’s interesting, something’s happened – the Van de Beek signing’s an interesting one – I still can’t get my head around it,” he said on Sky Sports.
“It’s almost as if that signing was sort of done in anticipation of one of the others leaving because Van de Beek has just sat on the bench for the last few months and he cost £40m.
“I think that Manchester United are preparing for someone leaving. Nemanja Matic might be finishing at the end of next season, maybe Pogba could leave.”
While Solskjaer has been blamed for van de Beek’s failure to settle at the club, it could also be argued that it is hard to see who’s place he takes, with United second in the Premier League.
Bruno Fernandes has arguably been United’s player of the season from attacking midfield, with Pogba’s importance to the side also clear.
