Manchester United decided against a transfer pursuit of Kai Havertz this summer.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was open about his desire to improve his playing squad towards the end of the Premier League season, and he has since been able to welcome Netherlands international Donny van de Beek.
Prior to that the Red Devils pipped Chelsea to third place in the table as both clubs secured Champions League qualification, but the Blues have outdone them in the transfer window..
As well as Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, Frank Lampard has added Kai Havertz to his playing squad following plenty of interest in the German international.
Manchester Evening News have now reported that United had originally been in the race for the 21-year-old, but dropped out due to their interest in Jadon Sancho.
They add that although the England winger remains their biggest target, the club are also looking at potential additions in both the centre, and on the left, of their defence.
United are said to be monitoring Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilon, as well as keeping their eye out for a possible partner for Harry Maguire in the middle.
Reguilon, 23, spent last season on loan at Sevilla, and although he helped them to Europa League glory – his place under Zinedine Zidane is far from certain in the capital.
“It’s going to be a strange summer,” Solskjaer said of his plans back in August.
“We’ve only got a couple of weeks away from each other before we get going again. That’s going to be a mental challenge.
“Of course, we’re going to keep pushing and keep demanding more of the players we have but still we’re looking to improve.
