Man Utd make breakthrough in negotiations that impact Frank Lampard and Chelsea

Manchester United have reportedly made a breakthrough in contract negotiations with Chelsea transfer target Dean Henderson. The 23-year-old has impressed this season on loan at Sheffield United. And it now seems that he’s close to penning a contract extension over at Old Trafford, in a major boost to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Manchester United have seen Henderson shine during his two years away from the club on loan, with the 23-year-old helping Sheffield United finish ninth in the Premier League table.

As a result, he’s emerged as a Chelsea transfer target with Frank Lampard eager to land an upgrade on Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Cabllero over at Stamford Bridge.

But Football Insider say United have made a ‘breakthrough’ in contract discussions with Henderson.

It’s claimed that discussions between both parties have accelerated since the end of the Premier League season eight days ago.

And they’re said to be making ‘excellent’ progress as they look to fend off interest from Chelsea.

Should Henderson sign a new contract, that will likely force the Blues into looking elsewhere as Lampard eyes a title tilt.

Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with the La Liga giants in desperate need of a cash injection.

Ajax’s Andre Onana is also on their radar, with the goalkeeper seeking a new challenge away from Amsterdam.

And Chelsea have also been linked with Barcelona’s Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Burnley’s Nick Pope and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer as they look to land new No 1.

Meanwhile, Henderson isn’t expected to become United’s No 1 next season despite the erratic performances of David De Gea.

And Chris Sutton believes he should fight for another loan spell away from Old Trafford, saying: “Dean Henderson must not go back to Manchester United and simply sit on the bench.

“Ask your manager a straight question: ‘Am I going to play?’ If the answer is anything but yes, get yourself out on loan.

“Return to Sheffield United or fight to join another Premier League side — we know Chelsea want a new goalkeeper!

“Everton’s Jordan Pickford is now third in my England shot-stopper rankings, after Henderson and Burnley’s Nick Pope.”

Solskjaer tipped Henderson to be No 1 for club and country in the future when asked about the goalkeeper earlier in the campaign.

“We have Sergio Romero, Lee Grant and David de Gea.

“I have a good problem to decide how our goalkeeping department is going to look next year. You can’t have three or four top keepers there.
