Manchester United could beat Lyon to the signing of Facundo Pellistri.
The 18-year-old winger currently plays for Uruguayan Primera Division outfit Penarol, and has already made 37 appearances across the 2019 and 2020 seasons and scored two goals.
United have spent most of their time this summer putting together a bid to try and convince Borussia Dortmund to sell Jadon Sancho, but a move for Pellistri could be more realistic – and far cheaper.
The youngster has also caught the eye of Ligue 1 side Lyon, who remain in pole position to get a deal done.
Calcio Mercato have reported that United are trying to make a late surge to secure an agreement with Penarol that would see the player return to South America on loan for the remainder of their season.
United are said to have offered the player a five-year deal, but it is the loan option that gives them ad advantage over Lyon, who want him to move to France immediately.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said when asked about the final few days of the transfer window: “You never know in football. You’re never surprised if anything pops up.
“We get speculation about us all the time. The club is working hard do what we want to do. I’m focused on the players we’ve got, ready for Sunday, playing. That’s the sole focus in the coaches office."
Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has insisted that no late bids will be accepted from United for Sancho before the window closes on Monday after an initial offer worth £90m with add-ons was rejected.
He said: "Everything that can be said on this subject has already been said. And nothing will change that."
Dortmund boss Lucien Favre then added when asked if Sancho will play against Freiburg this weekend: "Jadon had a slight cold. We'll see today.”

Captain Marco Reus has also said when asked about the future of Sancho: For us players that was great news. We all were happy that he will be with us for the season.
"Also because he delivers scorer points for the team. Goals, assists – in the end that translates to a lot of points.”
Before adding: There will surely be phases in his career where things will not go as smoothly as now, and we will see how he is going to deal with something like that.”
