Gabriel Magalhaes will agree to join Arsenal if Manchester United choose not to increase their offer for the Lille defender, according to reports in Italy.
Magalhaes, 22, looked set to become a Gunners player this summer before the Red Devils tabled a last-minute bid to hijack the deal.
It is believed the Brazilian is contemplating his options following United’s late move, with Napoli also interested in signing him.
But according to Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Arsenal will win the race for his signature unless United come up with a better financial offer.
Di Marzio posted on Twitter: #Gabriel (@losclive defender) is closer to @Arsenal: if @ManUtd will not raise, the player will accept #gunners offer @SkySports @SkySportsPL”.
Magalhaes racked up 34 appearances for Lille in the 2019/20 campaign, helping Christophe Galtier’s side achieve a fourth-place finish in Ligue 1 prior to its curtailment.
According to The Independent, United have asked the youngster to delay his decision as they lay out their proposals to him and his representatives.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in need of a new centre-back partner for Harry Maguire this summer amid concerns over Victor Lindelof’s consistency at Old Trafford.
Mikel Arteta is also on the hunt for defensive reinforcements at Arsenal, with reports suggesting the Spaniard is set to offload up to 10 players as part of a mass clearout in north London.
While it is currently unclear which side Magalhaes will choose, he certainly won’t be a Lille player next term.
President Gerard Lopez told BBC World Service: ”Gabriel is young, extremely powerful, currently right now probably one of the two most dominant central defenders in the French league.
“The way we work is very simple. We explain to him and his environment, his agent, what we are looking for, and once we get those offers the choice is his, like we did with Nico [Pepe] and Victor [Oshimen].
