Manchester United have been placed on red alert amid reports that Raphael Varane is yet to take a firm decision on his future. Varane has long been linked with a move away from Real Madrid this summer, but the Frenchman is reportedly still weighing up his options.
United are desperate to land a world-class central defender this summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seeking a player to partner Harry Maguire next season.
Maguire’s ankle ligament injury undermined the end of United’s 2020/21 season, with Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe struggling in his absence.
Varane has long been a target of United, who have tried twice before to earn his signature.
Sir Alex Ferguson led the attempts to sign the towering centre-back from Lens in 2011 when he was 18 but Real’s then sporting director Zinedine Zidane intervened and Varane moved to Madrid instead.
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was also reportedly willing to sanction a £100million move for the centre-back after France’s successful 2018 World Cup.

Neither move came off, but with the 28-year-old having been at Real for 10 years, it looks likely that United could have a third chance to sign him this summer.
Varane has another year left on his Real contract but is yet to sign an extension amid strong rumours linking him with other clubs.
United are not the only suitors, however, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly interested in bringing him back to his home country this summer and Chelsea also keeping tabs on him.
According to Goal, Varane is yet to make a decision on his future and ‘all options remain on the table at present’.
While Sergio Ramos’ departure has now been announced, it is not certain that Varane will be following him out of the door.
The report says he has not asked to leave Real and there remains a chance that he will sign a new contract with Los Blancos after the Euros, where he is playing for France.
Real want to keep hold of their long-serving defender, who would expect to remain first-choice under Carlo Ancelotti next season.
Zidane’s successor as manager currently has Eder Militao, Nacho and the incoming David Alaba as his central defensive options.
If Varane does decide to leave, then Goal says that Real’s asking price is ‘set to determine’ whether a move to Old Trafford becomes ‘a viable option’.
Previous reports have suggested Real want £51.5m (€60m) for his services and will not fall below a fee of £42.9m (€50m).
Varane is not the only option for United, who have also been linked with Villarreal’s Pau Torres, Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Atalanta’s Cristian Romero.
