Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly planning to deploy a three-at-the-back formation next season as United look to mount their first serious title tilt in a number of years.
These rumours come in the wake of the Red Devils announcing their second marquee signing of the summer after confirming a deal had been agreed in principle to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.
United are thought to have parted ways with £42m in exchange for a central defender who has been a mainstay in the Los Blancos backline since the age of 21 and has won four Champions League titles alongside a World Cup in 2018 for national side France.
Solskjaer's side have already spent big once this window, finally landing long-term target Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund to the tune of £73m.
Former Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton has also been brought in to deputise for both David de Gea and Dean Henderson.
Many believed that Varane would play alongside club captain Harry Maguire as a pairing in the heart of central defence, but Solskjaer is reportedly on the prowl for another central-back to make up the trio in time for next season's opening exchanges.
Who else should Man Utd look to sign this summer? Have your say here.
While he could use the likes of Victor Lindelof or Eric Bailly, neither has particularly cemented their status as a defender of Man Utd calibre and the Old Trafford hierarchy are thought to be keen on bringing in another top-tier defender to form a back three with Maguire and Varane.
Further additions could be made to United's backline in the form of Atletico Madrid's Kieran Trippier, wanted by Solskjaer to come in and jostle with Aaron Wan-Bissaka over the first-choice right-back starting spot.
Trippier is nearing the twilight of his playing days at 30 years of age but could actually prove to be an inspired purchase, boasting years of experience and could be a player someone like Wan-Bissaka can learn from.
