Manchester United's interest in Bologna forward Marko Arnautovic pushed a season ticket holder of 30 years to the verge of quitting the club for 'principled reasons'.
The former Stoke and West Ham striker was linked with a move to Old Trafford having scored 15 goals across 35 appearances for his current club having left Shanghai Port last year.
Before the Red Devils decided to end their pursuit of the ageing star, one loyal fan came to the brink of ending their association out of embarrassment.

Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News explained on Twitter that the fan in question sent an email to chief executive officer of United, Richard Arnold.
They told the club chief that they would no longer purchase a season-ticket should the 33-year-old join the club – with many other fans outraged at their bid.
After an opening bid of £6.8million was rejected by Bologna, United are thought to have moved on and consider other targets before the end of the window.

United are on the lookout for a new forward following the departure of Edinson Cavani, who scored 12 goals across his 41 Premier League appearances for the club.
Furthermore, the future of Cristiano Ronaldo remains uncertain due to his desire to play Champions League football – who came off the bench in their opening day defeat against Brighton.
As well as supporters, pundits have all been baffled by United's interest in Arnautovic, who played 39 times for Shanghai Port after leaving West Ham in 2019.
Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton said of the interest on BBC Radio 5 Live: It's a real wrong move in terms of the eyes of the supporters.
"There's a million other players out there United should have been linked with. I do no get that.
"It's an absolute PR disaster. If Arnautovic comes in, that's going to put Ten Hag under so much pressure."
