Manchester United will have to pay Yannick Carrasco’s full release clause in order to sign the Atletico Madrid star, according to reports. Erik ten Hag is keen to bring in a new forward, regardless of what happens with the future of Cristiano Ronaldo. And the Red Devils may turn to the Spanish capital again, having agreed a deal with Real Madrid for Casemiro earlier in the week.

Manchester United could still sell Ronaldo before the transfer window slams shut, with the Portugal international eager to leave for a team who can offer him Champions League football.

But Ten Hag wants a new forward regardless of what happens with the 37-year-old, with the Dutchman also needing to replace Edinson Cavani following his departure earlier in the summer.

In recent days, it’s emerged United have an interest in Carrasco – having been priced out of deals for Atletico Madrid team-mates Joao Felix and Matheus Cunha.

Yet Marca, via Sport Witness, say United will have to pay the player’s £50million release clause in full if they’re to bring him to Old Trafford.

Atletico don’t want to negotiate an exit for the forward, who scored six goals and registered six assists from 34 La Liga matches last term.

And while United’s interest is yet to materialise into a formal offer, they do have the money required to make Carrasco their fifth signing of the summer.

Man Utd takeover: The Glazers have five reasons to sell Man Utd

The Belgium international previously was of interest to Arsenal back when Unai Emery ruled the roost over at the Emirates Stadium.

But United are now hoping to bring him in, though whether they agreed to pay Carrasco’s release clause when the attacker has two years left on his contract is something only time will tell.

Atletico want to tie their winger down to a new contract, with the La Liga giants hoping to double his release clause and increase Carrasco’s salary.

Yet amid suggestions he’s tempted to move to United, there’s no guarantee he’ll end up making a blockbuster switch to the Premier League at the current moment in time.

United have already struck gold in Madrid once this summer, with the Red Devils agreeing a fee with Real Madrid for Casemiro.

The Brazil international is poised to move to England in a huge £60m deal, a fee that will make him the club’s fifth most-expensive signing after previous deals for the likes of Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Romelu Lukaku and Jadon Sancho.

United had, initially, been hoping to recruit Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona – with Ten Hag previously working with the Netherlands international at Ajax.

But with the 25-year-old reluctant to move to Old Trafford, Casemiro has now been recruited instead.

As well as Carrasco, United also have interest in three other forwards as they look to climb up the Premier League table following a nightmare start to the season.

Antony remains their main target, though Ajax have made it clear they won’t part ways with the Brazil international for anything less than £80m.

Chelsea star Christian Pulisic is on the Red Devils’ radar, though it’s unclear if the Blues will allow the USA international to join a direct rival.

And United are keen on Cody Gakpo, too, having seen the Netherlands international dazzle for PSV Eindhoven over the past year.

In addition to a forward, United also want to strengthen in two other areas of there squad before September 1.

A back-up goalkeeper is wanted to provide competition for David De Gea, particularly in the wake of the decision to loan Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest.

And United want a new right-back, too, at a time where Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams have both been deemed surplus to requirements.

Speaking after the Red Devils lost 4-0 to Brentford last weekend, meanwhile, Ten Hag admitted he was hoping to add to his squad.

Man Utd fixtures: When Erik ten Hag’s team face every Premier League team

“You have to be ready for a game and be ready for the battle as individuals and as a team. We have to push each other and bring the demands in because it is not good,” he said following the loss at the Gtech Community Stadium.

“It is clear we need players, but I don’t want to think about that in this moment. The good players we had should have been better.

“I hoped for a better start, I have to believe because I have seen good things, but the two games from now are disappointing.

“We will analyse and we will move forward, but one thing is quite clear, we have to do things better.

“This team is good enough to beat Brighton and Brentford which we didn’t, so we have to question ourselves.”
