Manchester United only spent one training session working on the tactics used in their battering by Liverpool last month.
The Red Devils suffered an embarrassing defeat in the Premier League to their traditional rivals in April. They were outclassed from start to finish and went on to lose the game 4-0 in what was very much a continuation of their lacklustre season.
But it has now been revealed that the players had just one training session to prepare for the tactics used against the Premier League title contenders. According to The Athletic, the 3-4-3 Ralf Rangnick deployed was almost completely off the cuff.
United lined up with a back three consisting of Harry Maguire, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot operating as the two-wing backs. Unsurprisingly, they were run ragged by a well-drilled Liverpool who have spent years perfecting their 4-3-3 formation.
A source told The Athletic: “Each player needs to know their job and everyone else’s, so if someone doesn’t perform a task they get called out collectively. United don’t have that. Week by week they don’t understand their roles and responsibilities, so too many excuses can be made.”

It is yet another sign of the chaos that has engulfed the Old Trafford club this campaign. There have been persistent reports of in-fighting within the dressing room and players not understanding the coach’s instructions.
It is also understood that Rangnick has given his players considerable time off from training, as well as missing one himself when players returned after being knocked out of the Champions League. United hope the appointment of Erik ten Hag from Ajax as permanent manager will change their fortunes ahead of next season.
