Man Utd star Amad sends public message to Mason Greenwood after Getafe debut

Manchester United youngster Amad has sent a public message to Mason Greenwood following his debut for Getafe. The forward is seemingly delighted to see his exiled team-mate back in action.

Greenwood made his first appearance in 603 days on Sunday. He came on as a 77th-minute substitute in Getafe’s 3-2 win over Osasuna.

The match was level when he came on but Nemanja Maksimovic scored a winner for the hosts nine minutes later to get Greenwood off to the perfect start. Greenwood has joined Getafe on a season-long loan after it was decided he would continue his career away from United.

United players have generally remained quiet on the subject of his departure. But Amad has broken his silence by sending a message on social media.

Amad was following the match and posted a video on his Instagram story of him recording the TV screen when Greenwood was brought on. He captioned the video with two love heart emojis and a cupped hands emoji.

It was Greenwood’s first professional appearance since his arrest in January 2022. He was later charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

But the charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February this year. United then conducted their own internal investigation into Greenwood, which didn’t conclude until August.

Club chiefs had initially planned to reintegrate him into Erik ten Hag’s squad. However, protests and expected backlash saw a U-turn and the decision was made for him to leave.

United attempted to find a permanent new home for Greenwood but were unable to do so. He was linked with moves to Saudi Arabia, Italy and Turkey but several clubs distanced themselves from his signature.

Steven Gerrard, manager of Saudi side Al-Ettifaq, dismissed claims that he was keen on signing Greenwood. Roma, managed by former United boss Jose Mourinho, did the same.

Besiktas were linked with Greenwood in the final few days of the window, as were Lazio. But neither move came off and Getafe completed his loan signing late on deadline day and he has made his first appearance for the club at the earliest opportunity following the international break.

Greenwood will be pushing for his first start for Getafe in the coming weeks. They face two tough away matches against Real Sociedad next Sunday and Athletic Club the following Wednesday.
