Man Utd star De Gea explains message Ten Hag shouted before Fulham win

Erik ten Hag reviews Man Utd's win against Fulham

Manchester United star David De Gea has opened up on a message Erik ten Hag shouted to the players before the club’s 2-1 win over Fulham on Sunday. Kenny Tete put the Cottagers ahead at Old Trafford. But goals from Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes ended up giving the Red Devils all three points.

Manchester United finished third in the Premier League table with their victory over Fulham.

And De Gea, speaking to MUTV following the fixture, has claimed Ten Hag should at the squad to have a ‘winning mentality’ prior to the showdown.

“I’ve had many final games here at the end of the season and today was a nice one,” said the Spain international, who was also given his Golden Glove award by his manager.

“We played well, we won the game, so the fans enjoyed it and I think we’ve improved a lot from last season as well.

“We still have one more game to go so it’s a great way to end the campaign.

“The improvement is there, of course, we still have far [to go] but [it is] a massive improvement from last season.

“Winning a cup, finishing third, it’s never easy to finish in Champions League places in England, and then we have another final, a big final – I think at the moment it is a great year.

“The manager wants us to be focused every game, to win every game.

“He was shouting before the game ‘come on guys, we have to finish properly, winning mentality’. We showed again [at] 1-0 down, suffering a bit, but then we created chances.

“We could have scored more than two. But like I say, [it was] a big way to finish the season with a victory and give enjoyment to the fans.

“It’s perfect, it was my first time with my daughter on the pitch. The fans shouting, so it was a great moment for myself.

“Tomorrow we recover and we start to prepare for [the final]. We’ll start to get ready.

“We know it’s a big final, a special game, and the whole year we’ve been fighting to be in the position to win titles and we will try absolutely everything to try to win.”

As for Ten Hag, the United boss insisted in a press conference that his side have a chance of beating Manchester City in Saturday’s FA Cup final.

“You always have a chance in football,” said the 53-year-old.

“History shows we beat them in January.

“In the last couple of years, we beat City many times, so these players know when they play at their level they can compete.

“It’s obvious we play against the best team, but there’s a chance and we have to go for the chance and give everything.

“We can’t find excuses for ourselves after the game. I’m sure we’ll play a good game on Saturday.”

Ten Hag then seemed to aim a dig at the Glazers by adding: “The club knows if you want to play top four and compete for trophies in this league, then you have to invest.

“Otherwise you don’t have a chance, because other clubs will. We’ve seen it in the winter – all the clubs around us made huge investments.

“We didn’t, but still we made it, so I’m proud of my team.”

United have already faced City twice this season.

They lost 6-3 at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden netting hat-tricks.

But they did claim victory at Old Trafford in January courtesy of goals from Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.
