Man Utd talks with Timo Werner emerge ahead of summer transfer window

Manchester United held talks with RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner before football came to a crashing halt because of the coronavirus crisis, reports say. The Germany international has been in sensational form, scoring 27 times for the Bundesliga side this season. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s chances of landing the 24-year-old appear remote.

Manchester United boss Solskjaer wants to sign a striker this summer.

The Norwegian has seen Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood all shine since the summer exits of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez.

But while United have seen Odion Ighalo impress since his January move from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua, Solskjaer wants more.

The Red Devils have been linked with Werner amid his stunning form at Leipzig, with the Germany international taking his game to new heights under young manager Julian Nagelsmann.

Werner has found the net 27 times this season across all competitions, establishing himself as one of the deadliest strikers on the planet.

And The Athletic say that, before football crashed to a halt in March, the former Stuttgart star held talks with United about a potential move.

It’s also claimed his representatives talked with Chelsea at a time where Frank Lampard is seeking an upgrade on Tammy Abraham.

Werner himself also spoke personally to Barcelona. Quique Setien is mindful Luis Suarez is approaching the twilight years of his career and, consequently, has started the hunt for a replacement.

However, the report adds that the Leipzig star would prefer a move to Liverpool instead.

He believes that, because of Jurgen Klopp, the roster of players on the Reds’ books and their playing style, Anfield would be the ideal next destination.

Klopp and Liverpool reportedly view Werner as ‘exceptional value for money’.

However, because of the coronavirus crisis, the current Premier League leaders aren’t planning any major deals tis summer.

And Werner could stay at the Red Bull Arena for another year if Liverpool choose not to sign him this summer.

United may now have to look at alternatives – and many have been linked.

Lyon hotshot Moussa Dembele is under consideration behind the scenes at Old Trafford having scored 16 Ligue 1 goals this season.

PSG’s Edinson Cavani has also been backed to join, although the Uruguay international appears to prefer Atletico Madrid.

And United could yet sign Ighalo permanently despite Shanghai putting a price tag of £20million on the Nigerian.

Meanwhile German legend Lothar Matthaus has urged Werner to stay at Leipzig another season, warning him that he will just sit on the bench at Anfield.

He said: “Jurgen Klopp likes fast players in attack and Werner has pace, but he has to play.

“At Leipzig, Timo has his position. He is a fixed player in the system of Julian Nagelsmann. But Liverpool are one of the best clubs in the world.’

“Sure, Werner could fit in at Liverpool but he likes to play the big games and he would have to get someone out of the team. I am talking about Mane, Salah or Firmino.’

“I think when all these players are fit to play, then Werner would sit on the bench, which is not good, as he is a player who loves to play all the time.’

“So, maybe it would be better to have another year at Leipzig.”
