Man Utd transfer round-up – Varane first choice as rising star also considered

It has been eight years since Manchester United last lifted the Premier League title and whilst they have been making steady progress under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it is widely accepted they will need further reinforcements if they are to beat the likes of Man City and Liverpool to the crown.

United have already tied Edinson Cavani down to a bumper new contract but Solskjaer was quick to state that doesn’t mean they won’t be in the market for a new forward this sumer, with the likes of Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho all heavily linked with transfers to Old Trafford.

It is sure to be a busy window and here Mirror Football round-up all the latest United transfer news.

Real star tops United's list

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is Man United’s main defensive transfer target, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano .

United have been linked with a host of defenders in recent months, including Real veteran Sergio Ramos who is out of contract in the summer.

However, Romano told The Here We Go Podcast that Varane is the Red Devil’s number one defensive transfer target but that his departure could depend on the future of his manager, fellow Frenchman Zinedine Zidane.

Spanish publication Marca listed Varane as one of several players whose futures are currently in doubt but Romano said United are considering other options, such as Sevilla centre back Jules Kounde.

United told Felix is not for sale

Atletico Madrid have told any clubs interested in Joao Felix that he is going nowhere.

French publication Le10 Sport has claimed Man United wanted to sign Felix last year and there had been suggestions that the Premier League side may make a move this summer.

There had also been reports that Atletico would consider a swap deal, with Felix moving to Barcelona and Antoine Griezmann heading back to Atletico.

However, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo insisted: "There's no way [Joao Felix] leaves.

"He has to adapt, but when he takes off he'll be one of the most important players on the planet.

"Players aren't machines; they have good days and bad, and he'll have many glorious afternoons at this club."

Solskjaer wants to assess youngsters up close

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to bring Teden Mengi and James Garner into his first team plans over the summer before deciding whether their short-term future remains at Old Trafford next season.

The pair have spent a large chunk of the 2020/21 campaign out on loan, with centre back Mengi spending the second half of the season on loan at Derby County and midfield Garner having time at Watford and then Nottingham Forest.

Derby boss Wayne Rooney is reportedly keen to retain Mengi after his nine appearances and Garner has impressed while at Forest and is expected to attract interest.

But The Manchester Evening News claims Solskjaer wants the duo to join up with the first team over the summer before deciding if they will be shipped out on loan once more.
