Man Utd transfer talks reach deadlock with just £1.9m preventing the deal

Roma are having trouble financing a deal for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, reports claim. The centre-back enjoyed a successful loan spell with the Serie A heavyweights but his valuation is proving too steep for Paulo Fonseca’s side.

Smalling joined Roma on a season-long loan in August 2019 and quickly settled into life at the Stadio Olimpico.

The 31-capped England international has made 35 appearances for the club – scoring twice and providing two assists in all competitions.

Roma are understandably eager to retain his services for the 2020-21 campaign and beyond but discussions haven’t yielded any positive results.

Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport claim Roma opened talks with the Red Devils and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward several weeks ago.

But there has been little progress with talks at deadlock.

Roma would like another loan deal but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side want a permanent sale and value his signature at £18.2million.

However, reports suggest Roma are standing firm and have told United they will not spend more than £16.3m on the 30-year-old.

It’s believed Juventus, Napoli and Inter Milan are all monitoring the situation and could launch bids of their own if Roma continue to stall.

The Red Devils currently have seven central defenders on their books including Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Smalling, Axel Tuanzebe and Marcos Rojo.

But Solskjaer is still looking for a left-sided centre-back to play alongside captain Maguire at Old Trafford next season.

Several possible names have been linked in recent months.

Villarreal defender Pau Torres, Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly, Milan Skriniar and free agent Jan Vertonghen are all reportedly on United’s shortlist.
