Manchester United have endured a torrid summer after missing out on top transfer targets.
Despite a busy deadline day, supporters were left deflated after the failure to secure priority target Jadon Sancho.
Another centre-back also wasn't brought in by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with Dayot Upamecano near the top of the Old Trafford shopping list.
But now both players could be heading to Liverpool, who look to take advantage of United's lacklustre summer.
Firstly, the Reds are licking their lips at Upamecano's release clause, which is set to dramatically drop to around £36.5m from £54m next summer, according to German outlet Bild.
Upamencano was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, with reports suggesting United boss Solskjaer was eager to add him to his squad.
But the France defender has also been on the radar of several clubs for the last few years, including Premier League rivals Liverpool and Arsenal too.
Upamecano, however, committed his long-term future to Leipzig in July, penning a deal that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2023.
The 21-year-old had a release clause of £54m in his old contract at the Red Bull Arena. But according to Sport Bild , that figure will drastically decrease next summer.
As for Sancho, Merseyside is one of the 'likelier' destinations for the winger.
Liverpool were linked with a move for the Borussia Dortmund star earlier in the summer.
But Jurgen Klopp shut down those reports early on, admitting Sancho's price tag was too high.
However, the Reds didn't spend too much this summer and could swoop in for the 20-year-old next summer, adding more pain to United.

Klopp is a big fan of Sancho – who bagged 20 goals and 20 assists last season – and has made no secret of his admiration of Dortmund's prized asset.
“An exceptional talent,” Klopp said of Sancho after Liverpool's pre-season friendly with Dortmund last summer.
“But he’s not the only one in England at the moment.
“That age group has a few, we have Rhian Brewster who is the same age, Raheem Sterling, for example, I don’t want to forget any wingers because there are a lot of talents.
“There’s a lot of very young, promising players in England so there’s no doubt about the potential of Jadon Sancho.
