Man Utd transfers: Deal collapses, Red Devils board blocking Sancho plan, £36m winger eyed

There’s still time for Manchester United to get deals done before the transfer window closes on Monday, but the clock is ticking.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he is satisfied with his current squad despite only one new signing being made this summer, but speculation continues to swirl around potential targets.

United continue to be linked with right wingers – most notably Jadon Sancho – as Solskjaer aims to address a problem area of his squad, with a number of defenders and centre-forwards also widely reported to be on the club’s radar.

Roma deal for United defender on brink of collapse

Chris Smalling’s proposed transfer to Roma is in doubt after negotiations between Manchester United and the Serie A club hit an obstacle.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio and Calciomercato (via Sport Witness), United have once again highlighted their asking price of £18million (€20m) for Smalling, with Roma still reluctant to pay that much for the defender.

It’s believed talks between Manchester United and Roma will continue in the coming days, but the optimism that had been building has now been replaced by doubt over the deal.

Smalling spent last season on loan at Roma, rediscovering some of his best form in Serie A, and is thought to be keen on a permanent return, with Inter also believed to be interested in the 30-year-old.

United board unconvinced by plan to fund Sancho move

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sell Daniel James to help fund a late move for Sancho amid reports Manchester United are set to miss out on the Borussia Dortmund winger.

Sancho has been United’s number one target all summer, but the Old Trafford club have struggled to make progress in negotiations to sign the player Solskjaer views as the solution to his team’s right-wing woes.

According to ESPN, Solskjaer is so desperate to Sancho he is willing to let James leave in order to fund a transfer, with the Norwegian unconvinced the Welshman can become an established first-team figure at Old Trafford.

Ed Woodward, however, is concerned selling James only one year after he has signed from Swansea City would send a bad message about United’s ability to develop young players.

James has been linked with a move to Leeds United. Manchester United have already rejected a loan offer from the Elland Road club for the Welshman, but the Whites could return with an offer to buy the player.

Barcelona winger has change of heart over United move

Ousmane Dembele has warmed to the idea of signing for Manchester United as talks continue over a potential loan deal for the Barcelona winger.

United have turned their attention to other right-wing targets having been left frustrated in the pursuit of Sancho, with Dembele identified as a possible option.

According to L’Equipe, the Frenchman had been initially reluctant to make the move to Old Trafford, but has had a change of heart following discussions with Manchester United midfielder and countryman Paul Pogba.

It’s claimed Dembele has already turned down offers from Juventus and Liverpool this summer, but Barcelona’s perilous financial position could see the Frenchman pushed out of the club to reduce their wage bill.

Sevilla winger could be option in United winger pursuit

Lucas Ocampos has emerged as a potential target for Manchester United as they desperately attempt to add a new right winger to their squad before the transfer window closes.

The Old Trafford club have opened discussions with Barcelona over a move for Ousmane Dembele, with the French winger viewed as an alternative to Sancho, but Ocampos has also entered the picture.

According to ESPN, Sevilla are willing to let Ocampos leave the club for the right offer, with last season’s Europa League winners slapping an asking price of £36million (€40m) on the Argentine.

The versatile 26-year-old scored 17 goals in all competitions for Sevilla last season and is believed to be well suited to the physical demands of the Premier League.
