Manchester United’s pursuit of Frenkie de Jong has taken a new turn with reports claiming Chelsea are set to bid for the Barcelona star. The Netherlands international is Erik ten Hag’s top summer target. However, he could end up making a sensational move to Stamford Bridge instead.

Manchester United have agreed a fee with Barcelona for De Jong.

But Spanish outlet Revelo, via Footmercato, have now claimed Chelsea are preparing an offer for the midfielder as well.

Barcelona want to jettison De Jong to balance their finances, especially after splurging big on the likes of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski in recent times.

Raphinha moved from Leeds, turning down interest from Arsenal and Chelsea in the process.

And Lewandowski decided to leave Bayern Munich for the Nou Camp after eight glittering years in the Bundesliga.

It’s claimed that, in recent hours, Chelsea have let Barcelona know they’re interested in De Jong.

And an ‘official proposal’ is now set to land on their desk as Thomas Tuchel eyes yet another new signing.

It’s been a good window for the Blues so far, with the west London giants bringing in two household names.

They raided Manchester City for Raheem Sterling, with the England international moving to the capital for a fee of £45m.

And Chelsea have also proceeded to snap up Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli – with the Senegal international touching down as a replacement for Antonio Rudiger.

Regarding De Jong, it’ll be interesting to see what unfolds.

United have agreed to pay Barcelona £63m for the Netherlands international, as well as £8m extra in bonuses.

But Chelsea could outbid them to put themselves in the driving seat when it comes to securing the 25-year-old’s signature.

And, if De Jong does move to Stamford Bridge, that will be a hammer blow to United given how aggressively they’ve pursued this deal.

It shall also have echoes of what happened with Cesc Fabregas back in 2013, too.

That year, David Moyes arrived to replace Sir Alex Ferguson and quickly earmarked the Barcelona midfielder as a priority target.

Fabregas was struggling to get into the Catalan giants’ starting XI at the time due to the presence of Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets.

But United, despite pursuing the former Arsenal star all summer long, then missed out and settled for the signing of Marouane Fellaini from Everton instead.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has also shed some light on Chelsea’s interest in De Jong.

And he’s claimed while the Blues are interested, a deal could be tricky from their perspective.

“Chelsea have been interested in Frenkie de Jong for weeks,” he wrote for CaughtOffside.

“But they know that Man United have an agreement with Barcelona, and also that Frenkie as of today has no plans to leave Spain.

“So far, De Jong remains on the same idea – so Chelsea will not submit offers until they know that Frenkie has different ideas.”

And Romano also claimed Barcelona want Bernardo Silva should De Jong leave, too.

“Bernardo Silva is a priority target for Barcelona but it hinges on Frenkie de Jong’s future – a deal is only possible if the former Ajax man leaves,” he said.

“To date, it is not even a negotiation with Man City, just a Barca idea linked to Frenkie’s future.

“And it won’t be easy because Pep Guardiola would like to keep Bernardo in Manchester.”
