Man Utds Harry Maguire breaks John Terry England record in San Marino thrashing

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has broken John Terry’s England record as the Three Lions thrashed San Marino 10-0 on Monday night.

The hammering secured Gareth Southgate’s side a spot in next winter’s World Cup in Qatar, with Maguire getting the scoring underway.

It has been a challenging season for Maguire since he helped England reach the final of last summer’s European Championships.

But he has had a better time of it when linking up with Southgate’s squad, scoring against Albania, before taking his international goals tally for 2021 to five on Monday.

His latest Three Lions goal came just six minutes into the visit to minnows San Marino, the lowest-ranked team in world football.

Maguire fought off his marker to power home a header from Phil Foden’s corner to set England on their way to claiming the three points that ensured they topped Group I.

That header was his seventh in an England shirt, which means he is now the highest-scoring centre-back in Three Lions’ history.

Before the current international break, Terry and Jack Charlton had led the way with six goals apiece, with Maguire now moving ahead of both of them.

The 28-year-old revealed his delight at the win, hailing the “brilliant year” England have enjoyed, having reached a major tournament final and qualified for another.

“Brilliant way to finish the year – Qatar let’s go,” Maguire tweeted.

Maguire’s England team-mate Harry Kane also broke an international record by scoring four goals against San Marino, with the Spurs striker insisting there is more to come from Southgate’s men.

“It came to the last game, we were expecting to win tonight but we done a great job and as you’ve seen in the other groups it’s not easy to qualify,” Kane told ITV Sport.

“When we win games people write off the opposition but it’s a tough battle so to go through is a fantastic feeling.

“We still need to keep working, I feel like we’ve been improving year on year with the World Cup and the Euros.

“Hopefully the mentality has been building over those years and we can take that into the World Cup now.”

United will be hoping that Maguire can bring that form back to the Red Devils when they travel to Watford on Saturday.
