Manchester United supporters bizarrely praised a pitch invader at Old Trafford for helping Erik ten Hag’s men hold on to their 1-0 lead and seal victory against Wolves.

Raphael Varane’s 76th-minute header proved to the be the difference against Gary O’Neil’s visitors who produced a strong showing following a disastrous pre-season.

A pulsating end to proceedings on Monday evening saw Wolves pile on the pressure in a bid to force a late equaliser but saw their momentum halted when a pitch invader ran onto the pitch.

The supporter, dressed in grey tracksuit bottoms and a black t-shirt burst out from the swathes of supporters seated in Old Trafford’s East Stand and sprinted into proceedings.

He was able to work his way through stewards and was able to get amongst players inside the United box where Wolves had possession of the ball at the time.

Referee Simon Hooper eventually caught on to what was happening and stopped play as stewards ran forwards trying to get hold of the intruder.

The invader managed to get close to several United and Wolves stars while also avoiding the initial tackles from those responsible for escorting him off the pitch.

Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa tried to get involved in stopping the pursuer as he ran forwards to try and aid stewards in getting the individual off the pitch.

The incident stole Wolves an opportunity to continue their build-up play and United were able to see out the remaining minutes and seal a hugely important opening day win.

Some supporters on social media have praised the pitch invasion for helping stop Wolves in their tracks. One fan stated online: ‘Who was the pitch invader? Give him a contract. Bruh did the best runs on the pitch.’

Another added: ‘That pitch invader was our MOTM’ while a third stated, ‘Dear me that pitch invader did us a solid.’
